Unsolicited spam is a constant issue for anyone using an email address. Even those who delete their unwanted messages can come across the need to find who the originator of an email is. Quite often, this need will arise when the recipient of an email is being threatened or harassed.

In order to determine who had originally sent such an email, there are two primary online options which are available.

An internet protocol, or "IP" trace, is your first option. An IP number is like a fingerprint for computers, since each system which is connected to the internet has a unique IP address. By tracking this IP address, one can find the specific location of a computer as well as it's internet service provider, it's host name, and other identifying information. While this information will not reveal the identity of the computers owner, it is best to gather as much information as possible if you are going to file a complaint.

The second way to uncover this information is to run what is called a reverse address lookup. In order to perform this, you will need to find a website which offers a reverse search service, and enter the information into their search engine. Using a reverse lookup is actually a relatively easy way to obtain information on who sent an email. Of course, while this service isn't free of charge, the fees are typically very small. It is also helpful to note that some service providers do not charge for unsuccessful results, however, there are still providers who do. You should also be aware that it may be necessary to perform several searches given that these websites don't always include identical sub-domains in their search profiles.
